A Year of Challenge and Growth: My 2023 Journey

As the year winds down, I find myself reflecting on a series of events that have profoundly impacted my life.

From personal loss to physical challenges and academic achievements, 2023 has been a year of learning to embrace life’s ups and downs.

1. Remembering My Uncle and Mourning the Loss of My Close Friend’s Sister:

The year opened under a shadow of grief with the loss of two significant people in my life. My uncle in Batam passed away at the age of 60, leaving behind a profound emptiness. His passing was a stark reminder of life’s delicate nature and the preciousness of every moment we share with our family. Additionally, I was deeply saddened by the death of my close friend’s sister at the young age of 38. This loss further underscored the unpredictability of life and the importance of treasuring our connections with friends and their families. These two heartrending events have taught me the invaluable lesson of not taking our time with loved ones for granted.

2. Facing Physical Challenges:

A fall led to a torn rotator cuff, marking the start of a frustrating six-month rehab journey. The path to recovery was filled with ups and downs, teaching me patience and resilience.

3. Discovering New Path:

As I adapted to my shoulder injury, I found solace in running. The daily 2.4km runs in the park became a therapeutic routine, offering me a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of determination.

4. Academic Milestones:

Amid these challenges, I achieved a significant milestone by passing my qualifying examination for my masters. The approval to commence participant recruitment for my research project brought me one step closer to graduation.

5. Learning from New Trainers:

Rehabilitation introduced me to two female trainers whose innovative approaches broadened my understanding of fitness. Their refreshing perspectives were a departure from traditional training styles, enriching my journey to regain my fitness.

6. Overcoming Surgical Fears:

Undergoing surgery to remove an abscess was an intimidating experience, yet the kindness of the doctor and nurses made it less daunting. This ordeal reinforced my appreciation for healthcare professionals and the unpredictability of health.

Concluding Note:

As I navigate through these varied experiences, I’m learning to accept and embrace myself, including my strengths and vulnerabilities. The journey through 2023 has been a mosaic of trials and triumphs, each experience carving a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. Now, as I gaze into the horizon of 2024, I am buoyed by a sense of hope and a desire for continued growth.

In 2024, I aspire to build upon the lessons learned this year. My experiences have taught me the value of resilience, the strength in vulnerability, and the beauty of adapting to life’s unpredictable tides. I wish to carry these insights forward, applying them not just in overcoming challenges, but in seeking out new opportunities for personal and professional development.

I envision a year where I can further my academic pursuits, bringing my research to fruition with the same dedication and passion that got me through my toughest moments. I hope to embrace new experiences, whether they be in fitness, learning, or simply in the everyday adventures that life offers.

More than anything, I yearn for a year filled with health and happiness for myself and my loved ones. After the loss and medical challenges of 2023, the importance of health has never been more evident. My wish for 2024 is for a year of well-being, where I can continue to run in the park, free of pain and full of life.

Lastly, I look forward to fostering connections – with old friends, new acquaintances, and the community around me. Each person I meet is a chance to learn, to share, and to grow. I am excited to see who I will meet in 2024 and what stories we will share.

2024 is not just another year; it is a canvas of possibilities, a chapter yet to be written. It is my hope that this new year will be a tapestry of joy, learning, and fulfillment. Here’s to 2024 – a year of dreams, determination, and discovery! Let’s bring it on!

From Intimidation to Inspiration: Navigating the Ups and Downs of My Fitness Journey

While I don’t often share about my fitness training journey, I feel compelled to document my current experiences. This need stems from an internal conflict I’m facing, one that’s both challenging and enlightening. My venture with a new personal trainer, aimed at rehabilitating my shoulder, marks a significant chapter in this journey. We started back in August, and right from the outset, her intense demeanor was intimidating. However, what really stood out to me was her ability to adapt her training approach in response to my feedback. It’s this adaptability and willingness to adjust that has added a unique dynamic to our sessions and my overall fitness journey.

Our sessions were paused for about a month due to my surgery in September, extending the 12-session package I had initially paid for. Now, having completed 8-9 sessions, I’m struck by her versatility and the refreshing approach she brings to training. Her methods are a significant departure from the traditional routines I’ve followed over the past three years, introducing me to a world beyond just machines and dumbbells. Each session is a new learning experience, adding value to my fitness journey. However, despite her efforts and the new perspectives she offers, I find myself grappling with mixed feelings. It’s a challenging comparison between her and my previous trainers, especially as I continue to explore the best path for my personal growth.

Today’s session was especially challenging. It was one of those days that many fitness enthusiasts can relate to – a day where, even after giving my all, I felt as though I didn’t meet my own expectations. The sense of disappointment was heavy, and I grappled with feelings of frustration and self-anger over my perceived shortcomings. Reflecting on this and writing it down, I recognized a pattern of self-doubt creeping in, often catching myself thinking, “I can’t do this.” It was a stark realisation of the mental barriers I face, as much as the physical ones.

Yet, as I was reflecting, I realised an important truth about strength training, and life in general: not every day can be about breaking records. Some days the weights feel heavier, and personal bests seem far away. But showing up and putting in the effort, even on the tougher days, is what builds character and resilience. The fitness journey is not a straight line to success, but a winding path with its share of highs and lows.

Communicating my feelings remains a challenge, despite achieving several ‘firsts’ successfully under her guidance. For example, when I managed to do a 12 kg kettlebell swing with a hand change – something I initially doubted I could do – my trainer commended me, but I couldn’t muster more than a neutral expression. I guess as a Capricorn, perhaps my expectations are too high, or maybe I struggle to feel proud of my achievements. This internal conflict often makes it challenging to communicate effectively with my trainer. I wish I could open up more, to share my thoughts and feelings openly, but finding the right words isn’t always easy. It’s a barrier I’m keenly aware of and one I’m striving to overcome.

I must keep reminding myself that this journey isn’t about perfection in every session; it’s about persistence and consistency. Every lift, every squat, every moment I spend in the gym contributes to my narrative – a story of resilience, strength, and unwavering dedication. It’s about building more than just muscle; it’s about cultivating mental and emotional fortitude.

I’m learning to embrace the tough days in my strength training journey. These challenging moments remind me that I’m human and keep me grounded. They teach humility and, most importantly, they propel me towards becoming stronger in every aspect. It’s a multifaceted growth that extends beyond the physical realm, touching the mental and emotional spheres of my life.

As 2023 draws to a close, it feels like standing at a pivotal crossroads, reflecting on a journey filled with both strength and struggle. Behind me lies a year marked by the clatter of weights, the challenge of rehabilitation, and countless valuable lessons learned – each one a testament to resilience and inner strength. Ahead, the promise of a new year beckons, ripe with uncharted challenges and boundless potential.

This journey, set against the backdrop of gym walls, has been about more than just mending a shoulder; it’s been a pilgrimage towards personal mastery and deeper self-understanding. With each session, I’ve woven a tapestry of sweat, determination, and moments of self-doubt, all contributing to a stronger, more enlightened self.

As I tie the laces of my training shoes for the upcoming year’s challenges, I do so with a heart brimming with gratitude and a spirit invigorated for what lies ahead. Let’s raise a toast to the relentless pursuit of improvement, within and beyond the confines of the gym. May the weights be ever in our favor, and our spirits as resilient as the muscles we train.

As the final pages of 2023 turn, I look forward to sharing more of this journey with you. Until then, keep lifting, keep growing, and embrace the adventure of a new year.

My Bali Adventure: Temples, Monkeys, and Stunning Sunrises

Uluwatu Temple: Monkeys and Mayhem (November 9th)

Our Bali adventure kicked off with a visit to one of Bali’s six key temples, Uluwatu Temple, locally known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu.

The temple’s beauty was as undeniable as the mischief of its resident monkeys! These little rascals were not just naughty but downright daring – snatching spectacles, breaking them, and even boldly snatching a woman’s earring. A true testament to the unpredictable nature of wildlife!

Address: Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia

Pura Lempuyang Temple: Patience and Crowds (November 10th)

We set out early for Pura Lempuyang (or the gate of heaven) the next day in East Bali. It’s located among the highlands of Mount Lempuyang at a height of 1,775m above sea level. It has a stunning location overlooking sacred Mount Agung and it’s one of Bali’s most visited shrines. The place was overcrowded and under the intense Bali sun, it felt like a challenge. The wait was long – almost two hours. The iconic shot we captured was worth every sweltering second but it was too cloudy that Mount Agung was missing.

Ujung Water Palace: A Serene Escape

Later that day, we found respite at Ujung Water Palace, a serene former palace turned park. The tranquility of Sukasada Park, about 5 kilometers from Amlapura, offered a much-needed break from the day’s heat and hustle.

Bobocabin Kintamani: A Night in Darkness (Evening of November 10th)

Our adventure continued as we navigated our way in near-total darkness to Bobocabin Kintamani. The lack of clear road signs made the journey an unexpected adventure, requiring us to ask locals for directions. We checked in around 7:00 PM and decided to rest early, anticipating an early start the next day.

Sukawana Sunrise Spot: Worth the Early Wake-Up (November 11th)

Waking up at 4:15 AM was a challenge, but the reward was indescribable. We reached Sukawana Sunrise Spot by 4:55 AM and witnessed a breathtaking sunrise. The sea of clouds, coupled with a soothing 15°C temperature and hot drinks was a moment of pure bliss.

Pahdi Specialty Coffee: A Taste of Serenity

Post breakfast at Bobocabin, we made our way down to Ubud. Before heading to Tegallalang, we visited Pahdi Specialty Coffee, the biggest coffee shop in Southeast Asia.

Nestled with a view of natural volcanic mountains, it offered a serene experience that enhanced our discovery of the beauty of Kintamani’s landscape over a cup of exquisite coffee.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces: A Tourist’s Dilemma

Our trip continued to the Tegallalang Rice Terraces, a stunning yet somewhat commercialized tourist spot where every photo opportunity came with a price. While stunning, the place felt like a tourist trap, with every photo-worthy spot like the famous swings requiring payment.

Ubud Raya Shala: Our Ubud Retreat

Our day ended with us checking into our tranquil stay at Ubud Raya Shala, a perfect place to unwind after a day filled with both excitement and exhaustion.

Bali, with its mix of serene landscapes, cultural richness, and unpredictable wildlife encounters, truly offers an adventure like no other. Every moment – whether spent waiting for the perfect photo, navigating in the dark, or experiencing a magnificent sunrise – added to the tapestry of memories that make this journey unforgettable. As I bid farewell to this island paradise, I carry with me not just memories but lessons in resilience, joy, and the beauty of nature. Bali is not just a destination; it’s an experience, a feeling, a memory that lingers long after you’ve left its shores.

“To awaken alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world. You are surrounded by adventure.” – Freya Stark

Until we meet again, Bali, terima kasih (thank you) for the adventures, the sights, the sounds, and the serenity. 🌅🌴🙏
