A Private Letter to Myself: End of 2025

Dear Wen,

2025 was not loud, but it was heavy with meaning.

You didn’t chase visibility. You chose responsibility. And you carried it quietly.

You built things that now run without you standing beside them. You designed workflows, fixed broken processes, aligned people who didn’t speak the same language, and held systems together when no one saw the seams.

You asked the hard questions, documented the messy parts, and made decisions that reduced friction for others, even when it added weight to you.

You finished what you started. You closed a long academic chapter with discipline and dignity. You defended your thinking, revised your work, and walked away knowing you earned it. Finally graduated with masters.

You climbed Mount Kinabalu alone. Step by step, no shortcuts, endure the cold wind, no audience. Although you did not conquer the peak, on that mountain, you proved something to yourself that no résumé could ever show.

You went to Thailand alone, played badminton with strangers, trusted yourself in unfamiliar spaces, and realised that solitude doesn’t mean loneliness. Sometimes it means freedom.

You chose braces, training, movement, and health, even when it was inconvenient. You showed up for your body the same way you showed up for your work: steadily, without drama.

You did not prioritise any relationship this year. Not because you couldn’t, but because you were building a foundation strong enough to eventually hold one.

You chose depth over distraction. Growth over noise.

If there were moments of doubt, fatigue, or quiet sadness, these were the honest moments. They did not mean you failed. They meant you were doing something real.

So thank you for everything, you made it!

For being consistent when no one was clapping. For choosing progress over comfort. For trusting that this season mattered, even when it felt invisible.

Go into 2026 lighter.

With good health. With more joy.

With the same integrity, but a little more fun.

You don’t need to prove anything anymore.

Just continue becoming and improving.

With respect,

Arete

New Beginnings: A Letter of Intentions and Aspirations for 2024

Dear Reading Self,

Happy New Year! As we step into 2024, it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and set intentions for the year ahead. This letter serves as a reminder of your aspirations, hopes, and the promises you’ve made to yourself.

Remember, this year is about growth and pushing beyond your comfort zones. Embrace new challenges and opportunities, knowing they are stepping stones towards achieving your dreams. Stay true to your values and beliefs, as they are your guiding light.

In moments of doubt or difficulty, recall your strengths and past triumphs. Let them fuel your confidence and determination. Surround yourself with positivity and people who uplift you. Their support is invaluable.

Focus on your health – both mental and physical. A balanced lifestyle is crucial for your well-being and will empower you to tackle your goals with vigor. Explore new hobbies, travel to places you’ve never been, and read books that expand your horizons.

Next, fitness isn’t just a goal; it’s a lifestyle. This year, commit to making physical health a priority. Remember, consistency is key. Whether it’s a daily jog, yoga, or hitting the gym, find activities that you enjoy and make them a part of your routine. Celebrate the small victories – each step, each lift, each stretch is progress.

Don’t forget the power of a balanced diet. Nourish your body with foods that energize and heal. It’s not about strict diets but about making mindful choices. Learn to listen to your body’s needs – sometimes it’s a salad, other times it’s a slice of pizza. Balance is essential.

Rest is equally important in your fitness journey. Your muscles need time to recover and your mind needs time to rejuvenate. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep and practicing stress-reducing activities like meditation or reading.

Financially, continue to be wise with your spending and investments. This year, make it a point to learn more about financial planning and wealth management.

Lastly, remember to give back to your community and those in need. Your kindness and generosity can make a world of difference in someone’s life.

Here’s to a year filled with joy, success, and personal growth. Believe in yourself, and the universe will align in your favor.

With optimism and excitement for what lies ahead,

Future Self

A Year of Challenge and Growth: My 2023 Journey

As the year winds down, I find myself reflecting on a series of events that have profoundly impacted my life.

From personal loss to physical challenges and academic achievements, 2023 has been a year of learning to embrace life’s ups and downs.

1. Remembering My Uncle and Mourning the Loss of My Close Friend’s Sister:

The year opened under a shadow of grief with the loss of two significant people in my life. My uncle in Batam passed away at the age of 60, leaving behind a profound emptiness. His passing was a stark reminder of life’s delicate nature and the preciousness of every moment we share with our family. Additionally, I was deeply saddened by the death of my close friend’s sister at the young age of 38. This loss further underscored the unpredictability of life and the importance of treasuring our connections with friends and their families. These two heartrending events have taught me the invaluable lesson of not taking our time with loved ones for granted.

2. Facing Physical Challenges:

A fall led to a torn rotator cuff, marking the start of a frustrating six-month rehab journey. The path to recovery was filled with ups and downs, teaching me patience and resilience.

3. Discovering New Path:

As I adapted to my shoulder injury, I found solace in running. The daily 2.4km runs in the park became a therapeutic routine, offering me a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of determination.

4. Academic Milestones:

Amid these challenges, I achieved a significant milestone by passing my qualifying examination for my masters. The approval to commence participant recruitment for my research project brought me one step closer to graduation.

5. Learning from New Trainers:

Rehabilitation introduced me to two female trainers whose innovative approaches broadened my understanding of fitness. Their refreshing perspectives were a departure from traditional training styles, enriching my journey to regain my fitness.

6. Overcoming Surgical Fears:

Undergoing surgery to remove an abscess was an intimidating experience, yet the kindness of the doctor and nurses made it less daunting. This ordeal reinforced my appreciation for healthcare professionals and the unpredictability of health.

Concluding Note:

As I navigate through these varied experiences, I’m learning to accept and embrace myself, including my strengths and vulnerabilities. The journey through 2023 has been a mosaic of trials and triumphs, each experience carving a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. Now, as I gaze into the horizon of 2024, I am buoyed by a sense of hope and a desire for continued growth.

In 2024, I aspire to build upon the lessons learned this year. My experiences have taught me the value of resilience, the strength in vulnerability, and the beauty of adapting to life’s unpredictable tides. I wish to carry these insights forward, applying them not just in overcoming challenges, but in seeking out new opportunities for personal and professional development.

I envision a year where I can further my academic pursuits, bringing my research to fruition with the same dedication and passion that got me through my toughest moments. I hope to embrace new experiences, whether they be in fitness, learning, or simply in the everyday adventures that life offers.

More than anything, I yearn for a year filled with health and happiness for myself and my loved ones. After the loss and medical challenges of 2023, the importance of health has never been more evident. My wish for 2024 is for a year of well-being, where I can continue to run in the park, free of pain and full of life.

Lastly, I look forward to fostering connections – with old friends, new acquaintances, and the community around me. Each person I meet is a chance to learn, to share, and to grow. I am excited to see who I will meet in 2024 and what stories we will share.

2024 is not just another year; it is a canvas of possibilities, a chapter yet to be written. It is my hope that this new year will be a tapestry of joy, learning, and fulfillment. Here’s to 2024 – a year of dreams, determination, and discovery! Let’s bring it on!

Navigating the Sea of Life: My Mid-Year Insights

As we hit the midpoint of this year, I find myself in a reflective state, pondering upon the intricacies of life. Here are some insights that I’ve gathered from personal experiences and interactions with those around me.

A Lesson in Humility

A routine visit to my deep tissue therapist turned into a profound lesson in humility. More than just a physical reprieve, these sessions often provide me with moments of introspection and a unique external perspective. During a recent visit, my therapist offered an observation that struck a chord. She mentioned that my assertive communication style might come across as arrogant to those unfamiliar with my character.

This was an eye-opener. I have always considered my forthrightness as an attribute, a show of confidence. But it seems the perception can differ for those yet to know me better. Upon her advice, I have decided to embrace humility more consciously, particularly towards my professors who are indispensable guides on my academic journey.

Humility, as I understand it now, isn’t about downplaying my abilities or being subservient. It is about respecting and valuing others’ perspectives and roles. Regardless of their status, everyone can offer valuable insights or assistance. The essence of humility lies in acknowledging the interconnectedness and worth of all individuals. Consequently, I plan to express my appreciation more frequently, a step towards building stronger relationships, especially with those still unfamiliar with my character.

Navigating Grief and Physical Challenges

The past months have brought their share of personal hardship. The loss of a close friend’s sister has had a profound impact, triggering a shift in my perspective. This unfortunate event emphasised the fragility of life, making me reassess my values, priorities, and worldview.

Simultaneously, I have been grappling with physical challenges, undergoing shoulder physiotherapy. The physical discomfort has taken a toll on my emotional well-being, causing feelings of vulnerability and uncertainty. It is at such times that I realise the importance of addressing these emotions rather than suppressing them.

Here are a few strategies I found helpful in managing these feelings:

  1. Journaling: Writing down thoughts and feelings helps express emotions and offers deeper insights.
  2. Physical Activity: Light exercises like walking can significantly improve mood and reduce stress.
  3. Social Support: Sharing my experiences with friends provides comfort and perspective.
  4. Self-Care: Prioritising activities that help me relax and recharge, like reading a book or listening to music, has proven invaluable.

While it’s necessary to allow myself the space to experience these emotions, it’s equally important not to dwell on them for too long. The key is to find a balance: acknowledging my feelings and gathering the strength to move forward.

Gratitude – A Half-Year Mark Reflection

At this half-year mark, I would like to express my gratitude for:

  1. The Present Moment: I am grateful for the beauty and potential that the present moment offers.
  2. Experiences: Both joyful and challenging experiences have played crucial roles in shaping who I am.
  3. Health: Good health, that allows me to explore, experience, and enjoy life, is indeed a blessing.

Through this post, I wanted to share my journey, hoping it might resonate with some of you. Here’s to the strength, resilience, and life lessons we’ve gathered so far and the ones that await us in the coming months!

How to Stay Focused and Accomplish Your Goals in 2023

It has always been a habit to reflect on the past year we have all had in 2022. We has been living with COVID-19 for close to three years now, and has said it plans to treat the disease as endemic. Meaning that it continues to circulate at low levels in the population and causes occasional outbreaks. With this, most COVID-19 travel measures has been removed for fully vaccinated individuals.

2022 has had trials and tribulations for most of us. We can all look back on the year we’ve experienced appreciate all of the wonderful times, and take lessons from the not so great moments. Learning from experiences is a growth. Every win and every challenge opens up a door for discovery and opportunities.

Now, 2023 is here. The new year is all about becoming a better version of yourself and who you would like to bring into the new year. The start of each New Year is a time to reflect on the year just past and make plans for the future. It holds a special magic, with a promise of new opportunities and the possibility to change our lives for the better. It’s also a great time to bond over old memories as you endeavor to make more.

Setting goals can be a helpful way to focus your efforts and work towards achieving what you want in life. Here are a few tips that you can follow to set goals for 2023:

1. Reflect on what you want to achieve: Take some time to think about what is most important to you and what you want to accomplish in the coming year. Consider your values, strengths, and areas for improvement.

2. Make your goals specific and measurable: Instead of setting a general goal like “get in shape,” try setting a specific goal like “lose 5 kg weight” or “run a 5k.” This will make it easier to track your progress and stay motivated.

3. Set achievable goals: It’s important to set goals that are challenging, but also realistic and achievable. Consider your current circumstances and resources when setting goals to ensure they are within reach.

4. Set a deadline: Having a deadline can help you stay focused and motivated. Make sure to set a specific date for achieving your goal.

5. Make a plan: Break your goal down into smaller, actionable steps and create a plan for how you will achieve each one. This will help you stay on track and make progress towards your goal.

6. Monitor your progress: Regularly review your progress and adjust your plan as needed. Celebrate small victories along the way and don’t be too hard on yourself if you encounter setbacks.

Life is unpredictable and things don’t always go as planned. Therefore, it is important to be flexible and adapt to change. The choices we make and the actions we take can have a profound impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. Do be mindful of this and consider the consequences of every actions taken.

Since the horse is a majestic animal that embodies the spiritual power of independence, freedom, nobleness, endurance, confidence, triumph, heroism and competition, I hope 2023 be the year we tap frequently into the power of strength, courage, and freedom to find true peace and grow into the best version of yourself.

Get ready for a year of amazing blessings!

2021 Done, What’s Next?

The year 2021 had been a year where we all learn to live with Covid-19. For some of them, it could be a truly hopeful year where they seized the opportunity to go on trips or visit family and friends back home. Around the world, people have similar reactions to this “new normal” and build consensus around them. Perhaps three words to sum up 2021 will be living through choice.

The greatest shifts in my own life have come from living more intentionally. Intentionally living is asking myself why I do things and then being happy with the answers. If I am not happy with what I see, I will make changes accordingly. No one has everything figured out, but it’s okay to make mistakes. Nothing changes unless I take the courage out to make it happen. So I decided to do what matters most to me. From choosing to prioritize experiences, family, play, connection, exploration, and my health. Choosing to prioritize them now created a structural shift in how I live which requires leaving permanent changes in my behaviours. With consistency and perseverance, those small and repeated efforts made were the conscious decision to elevate one’s life priorities.

I came to realize that it won’t always be easy, but it’s better than living life feeling empty and exhausted. There is no finish line. Little by little with constant communication with yourself and making small adjustments every day will create a life in which you matter.

On the whole, we have to accept life is nothing more than a series of choices, and that we have a say in these choices. Let’s see this through to 2022. What would make your life more meaningful? It doesn’t just happen so the decision has to start somewhere. Starting making that choice to manifest the things that matter to us. Let’s stay focused on the things that matter.

Chaotic times in 2020, This too shall pass

2020 has changed everything.

Take heart. The madness of 2020 is coming to an end. 2020 has radically change almost everything we do: how we work, socialize, exercise, study, shop, manage our health, educate our kids, take care of family members. With this disruption occurrence, it’s the start of a completely different way of life.

Covid-19 has changed everything. I have to confess that I have learned a lot from this uncontrollable pandemic.

It had taught me that nothing is ever guaranteed and what we thought we can never lose can be lost in the blink of an eye. For example, the surge in Covid-19 cases revealed Singapore’s blind spots over migrant workers. The poor and dense living conditions at dormitories became a big loophole that all of us were left heedless of attracting the highly contagious nature of the coronavirus.  Dormitories were placed on locked down. It was really a wake-up call we all needed that we cannot remain the same. It is teaching us to take a closer look at everything around you and realize that there is some inequality going on. Maybe it’s time to strengthen our ‘gratitude muscle’ to stop and show appreciation for and return any kindness to anyone we met.

It had taught me that we have to adapt when things aren’t going in our favour. It’s an unpredictable ride. As a result, we oftentimes end up feeling overwhelmed when we feel off. But really, feeling off is just a part of being intrinsically human and aware of how we are feeling at that moment. They are what make you real.  A human with a beating heart. Maybe it’s time to start thinking that life can be easy, simple, and rewarding by just going with the flow.

It had taught me that some things can’t be waited and the real issues in our lives won’t go away on their own unless we find a solution. 2020 was the year we all realized that to keep on living, we must learn how to survive the unexpected changes in our lives and survive the most challenging and troubling feelings we go through. Giving up on the carefree vibe became seemingly inexorable, leaving behind those grandiose expectations and accepting the harsh reality. Responsibilities change, passions fluctuate, the pressure to be a certain person arises, and this alright. You might not achieve what you want all of the time. By swallowing down my pride, I have to rediscover myself, close whatever desires, and fathom up the courage to create my own new ending.

It had taught me that life is very fragile and unpredictable. These string of shocking and heartbreaking deaths of notable individuals occurred in 2020. For example, the NBA legend (Kobe Bryant) and his daughter was killed when the helicopter crashed into the side of a mountain. The Black Panther star (Chadwick Boseman) passed away after a very private four-year battle with colon cancer. The Taiwanese singer-host (Alien Huang) was found dead at his home and his autopsy report concluded that he died from cardiovascular complications. They may be gone but they are definitely not forgotten. None of us can stop life from being fragile. What we can guarantee is our here and now. You have no idea what is awaiting you tomorrow, so you should try your hardest to make the most out of today. No matter how tired you are, we should appreciate what we already have. It’s easy to get caught up in the continuous cycle of work, sleep, and more work. Our body and mind are the most valuable assets. To get through each day both need to be kept in good shape. Remember, we need to give ourselves a tune up every day by spending more time with your family, not with your home office. Limit distractions by resisting the urge to check email. Participate in hobbies or activities that you enjoy. Scheduling time for yourself and your mind and body will thank you.

Sometimes we aren’t supposed to make sense out of the chaos. Sometimes, the chaos is meant to help us make sense out of ourselves. All of us, we will have to adapt to a new way of living, working, and forging relationships. But with all changes, there will be some who lose more than most, and they will be some who have lost far too much already. Everyone wants to be safe, secure and accepted. No year is ever perfect. No matter good or bad, mistakes happen first, and learning tends to achingly follow.

In 2021, I hope that I will surround myself with people who appreciate how hard I feel and how much I care. Ditch the people who believe my big heart is a shortcoming rather than a virtue. I hope to carry the openness for new things to happen, for better things to become. This is your time to let go and only take with me what’s meant for me. I will push myself forward with radiant momentum to rebuild a better self. As long as I remember to listen to the inner child and find peace with it, I will always have a piece of magic within me.

How Far We’ve Come

img_8055

It’s been awhile ever since my last post. And, that’s because it’s been a while since I had time to actually sit down and write. Looking back, I feel that I have come so far by striving hard to attain and push forward towards my goals. However, the ocean ain’t calm. When something begins to stir, I will tend to panic and struggle mentally to deal with the circumstances.

Life always seems to present us with innumerable challenges and problems on a daily basis till our last breath. While reflecting, the Disney movie ‘Moana’ came to my mind. Moana draws on legends to tell a story of bravery. It calls for young people to embrace their family and community while also being brave and authentic. Moana’s big song, “How Far I’ll Go,” is covered with both warmth and wisdom.

Notably, life presents us with challenges when we set out to accomplish something great, so if one is going through tough times, it probably means one is taking on a big project. This can be illustrated in the movie where Moana has heard the ocean calling to her since she was a little girl. Doors will slam in your face where Moana loses her hope to save her island and community. However, she picked herself up, dust herself, and knock again. That’s the only way to achieve her goal in order to save her family and community. This reminds me that loss of hope is temporary. It might just compel you to pick yourself up and move forward…

As 2016 is coming to an end, it’s hard to believe 2017 is almost here! And whichever path we choose, it will always have been the one we needed to learn the most. Whether you believe it or not, you are enough and you deserve to be happy. It has taken me a while to come to terms and I still know that I am enough … and so do everybody. One last conclusion is that achievement will never be as fulfilling as the journey. If you are not able to enjoy the journey with those around, then the end goal becomes meaningless.

“Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.” ― Anne Frank

Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016

p1a2lc440m1h86q5m10pq5mnrje6.jpg

Looking at everything through crystal clear vision, it was impossible to imagine that I had spent time working towards goals that I want, developing skills I want to use.

In the new year, I don’t wish to do anything differently. I just hope that I can continue to be healthy and rather be a happy person with a certain set of attitudes.  Lots of life is about perspective. I wish I didn’t take these experiences to teach me not to take so many things for granted. Significantly, I’ve also learned that present moment living is the only way to go.

Sometimes when lives seem like we are driving backwards, we are really learning the steps that will guide us into the greatest forward leaps of our lives. I just have to be patient and realize that sometimes putting one foot in front of the other doesn’t go exactly in the direction I planned. This reminded me to continue to have faith in myself, even when it seems like all is lost.
And the good news is, faith is free.

As Lauren Kate asserted that “Sometimes beautiful things come into our lives out of nowhere. We can’t always understand them, but we have to trust in them. I know you want to question everything, but sometimes it pays to just have a little faith.”

Another Year Comes to an End…With A New Beginning

It’s time to say goodbye to 2015.

There is no better time for us to say how grateful we are.

Our year has come to end.

I’ve made more cherished memories.

I’ve learn, grow, and change from day to day.

I hope that all the things I’ve done

Have helped in some little way.

I suffer them. I survive.

I give from me to you.

In hope whatever I do and say,

Reflects the lessons learned.

For in my dearest memories,

I will keep them in my hearts.

With great hope and expectations,

Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.

Behold, the best is yet to come.

I see you. Darning your way to normality.

May the year 2016 be a new start and make a new ending.
