The Paradox of Purpose: Why We Exist in the First Place

人活着就是为了死亡

A deep reflection on life, death, and the architecture of meaning

I recently stumbled upon a Chinese TikTok post that said, with startling bluntness: “人活着就是为了死亡” Means “People live to die”.

At first glance, it sounds brutal, almost nihilistic. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized how much clarity hides inside that one sentence. It’s a reminder that life is finite, fragile, and never guaranteed. And perhaps, the very fact that death is inevitable is what gives life its texture, urgency, and depth.

Beyond Titles and Labels

We spend so much of our lives chasing roles and identities: student, employee, manager, parent, achiever. These labels help us navigate society, but they aren’t the essence of living. If all we live for is to stack titles like Lego blocks, then the TikTok line slices through the illusion: none of those will follow us past the grave. So what’s left when you strip away status? Experience. Relationships. Growth. The small, luminous moments like laughter that can’t be faked, a conversation that shifts your perspective, the quiet satisfaction of overcoming something you once thought impossible.

Death as Teacher, Not Enemy

To say “we live to die” is not to glorify despair. It is to acknowledge reality. Death is not a glitch in the system. It is the bookend that frames the story. Without it, our days would blur endlessly, stripped of urgency or meaning. When we accept death as teacher, life becomes a classroom where every experience is both practice and preparation. Preparation not in a grim, fatalistic way, but in the sense of learning how to let go, how to forgive, how to leave things better than we found them.

Purpose as Practice

If life is bound for death, then purpose cannot be a trophy we display. It has to be something we practice daily. Purpose isn’t discovered in a single flash; it’s shaped through rhythm, repetition, and ritual. Saying what matters now instead of waiting for “someday.” Building systems of care: for family, friends, even strangers. Turning empathy into small actions that outlast the moment.

Purpose is less about what you call yourself and more about what you consistently create, even in tiny, almost invisible ways.

The INFJ Lens

As an INFJ, I tend to see patterns beneath the surface. I feel the pull to make sense of contradictions. And here’s the paradox I can’t escape: if we live only to die, then the only sane response is to live fully: to create, connect, and commit. We cannot control the ending. But we can control the narrative arcs in between: the projects we build, the people we touch, the ways we stitch our private reflections into something that quietly serves others.

Living as if It Matters

So perhaps the real purpose of life isn’t some grand cosmic assignment. Maybe it’s as simple and as difficult as this: to live in such a way that your days add up to something you’re not ashamed to leave behind.

We live to die, yes. But in between, we live to love, to learn, to grow, and to design a life that would feel tender to part with.

And that, to me, is enough.

A Tale of an Unexpected Adventure: Embracing Serendipity

Please allow me to share an extraordinary story that happened on 28 July 2023.

On a day like any other, I stepped into an unexpected adventure and had the chance to lend a helping hand to strangers in a foreign land. As I stepped out of my house to head for lunch, my day took an unexpected turn.

Right there in my neighborhood, two bewildered tourists were standing on the road, seemingly waiting for a taxi. They seemed out of place among the familiar blocks of local HDB flats. As I neared them, they approached me, and my suspicion was confirmed – the two didn’t seem to belong to the typical residents milling between the neighborhood blocks.

The guy stopped me, revealing they were looking for a property they had booked through Booking.com. The man showed me the address that he was searching for: “149 Gangsa Road 670103” (refer to the attached screenshot above). I felt a pang of concern. Their destination didn’t add up. No landed properties were in this area and Airbnb-style rentals are prohibited in Singapore. Realization dawned on me; it seemed like they might be victims of a scam. Their booking was riddled with inconsistencies. An overseas contact number led nowhere when dialed. The price they paid was exceedingly high – $300 SGD for a single night. Despite the looming shadows of doubt, the couple maintained a calm facade. In the face of their predicament, I decided to help them navigate the situation. Given the weekend rush, finding hotel accommodation in Singapore can be a costly affair, especially when it’s last minute. Determined to assist, I whipped out my Agoda app and embarked on a quest to find suitable accommodation within their budget.

As if scripted in a movie, the taxi driver who had earlier dropped the couple off made an unexpected return. His confusion echoed ours. Having dropped them at block 103 and now at block 149, he too was baffled by the oddities of the situation. Thankfully, my search bore fruit as I managed to book a hotel for them. Once confused but now part of this serendipitous adventure, the taxi driver agreed to ferry the couple to their new, verifiable destination.

So there was my unexpected adventure of the day. In the humdrum of daily life, I was allowed to lend my helping hand. Now, let’s delve into the second part of this unexpected adventure. After assisting the couple in navigating their initial misfortune, an unusual request popped up: they wanted me to show them around Singapore. As first-time visitors, their enthusiasm was infectious, and I decided to oblige.

My mind was brimming with ideas for the quintessential Singapore experience. The dazzling light show at SuperTree Grove in Gardens by the Bay immediately came to mind. It’s a spectacle that leaves both locals and tourists in awe. As we watched the radiant colors dance in harmony with the music, the couple’s faces lit up with wonder. Their excitement confirmed what I already knew – it was an excellent choice. Next on the itinerary was a cultural deep dive into the heart of Singapore’s history and heritage – Chinatown. Their request for a taste of Chinese cuisine gave me the perfect idea: a visit to the well-loved Song Fa Bak Kut Teh. This is a local dish I personally believe every tourist should try, and luckily, they agreed. What started as a regular day turned into a spontaneous day off from work, with me donning the hat of a tour guide. Between explaining the history of Bak Kut Teh and guiding them through the bustling lanes of Chinatown, I found myself completely immersed in this unexpected role.

As the day drew to an end, the couple expressed their gratitude by offering to pay for my services. Despite their insistence, I couldn’t bring myself to accept it. My help was an act of kindness towards two individuals stranded in a foreign land, not a professional service.

I reflected upon and was it worth it? To some, taking a 3.5-hour impromptu time off work to guide 2 strangers around might seem perplexing. To me, the connection I felt with them was beyond the ordinary. It was as though we’d known each other for ages. I can’t quite put it into words, but the sense of satisfaction I derived from this unexpected experience was remarkable. This unexpected adventure reaffirmed my belief in the power of kindness and connection. I not only got the chance to help two tourists dodge a potential scam but also had the opportunity to show them the magic of Singapore. It was indeed a day well spent, one that I’ll fondly remember for a long time to come.

I am a firm believer that helping others is the quick way to find true happiness, making someone’s day a little bit brighter will, in turn, make my own day that much better. At the end of the day, this unexpected adventure turned misfortune into a journey marked by new friendships and a shared love for Singapore. Every year, International Friendship Day is celebrated on July 30. This story is perfectly suited for International Friendship Day. The key takeaway of this experience is a beautiful reminder of how friendships can form in the most unexpected places and situations. It underscores the power of human connection, kindness, and shared experiences, reminding us that sometimes life’s most memorable moments are those that happen unplanned.

Here’s a toast to the unexpected friendships, serendipitous adventures, and the magic of genuine connection.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”

Marching On: Reflections on How Time Flies

It’s hard to believe that we’re already in the month of March. It feels like just yesterday we were ringing in the new year, making resolutions, and setting goals for ourselves. But time flies, and before we know it, we’re already three months into the year.

It’s a cliché, but it’s true: time flies when you’re having fun. And even when you’re not having fun, time still seems to move quickly. It’s a strange phenomenon, but it’s something we all experience. Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and before we know it, we’re celebrating another birthday or holiday season.

One place that exemplifies the feeling of time flying by is the Singapore skyline. The city-state is known for its towering buildings and bustling streets, and time seems to move even faster when you’re there. From the Marina Bay Sands hotel to the iconic Merlion statue, the Singapore skyline has a way of making you feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself.

But even if you don’t live in Singapore, you can still experience the feeling of being part of something bigger. Whether it’s through your work, your hobbies, or your relationships, there are ways to connect with others and feel like you’re making a difference in the world. And when you’re engaged in something meaningful, time seems to move even faster.

So as we move into the month of March, let’s remember to embrace the feeling of time flying by. Let’s make the most of the time we have, whether that’s through pursuing our passions, spending time with loved ones, or exploring new places. And if you ever have the chance to visit the Singapore skyline, take it. You might just find that time flies even faster when you’re there.

In the meantime, let’s keep marching on towards our goals and dreams, and make the most of the time we have. Who knows, by the time we blink, it may already be summer.

Embracing Reality: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Growth

Introducing a thought-provoking poem about the journey of accepting reality. This journey is one that requires courage, strength, and an open mind. It involves letting go of our illusions, dreams, and misconceptions and embracing the truth, no matter how harsh it may seem.

This poem highlights the beauty in imperfections and the power in vulnerability. It inspires us to appreciate the reality of our lives, find joy in the present moment, and achieve peace and happiness. Join me as we explore this theme and find solace in the words of this inspiring poem.

Accepting reality is a journey we must make,
For it’s the path that helps us to awaken.
From the illusions we’ve built and the dreams we chase,
To the truth that we all must face.

It takes bravery and strength, to open our eyes,
To the world that can be harsh and unkind.
But once we do, it’s a journey of growth,
As we learn to find peace and happiness, in what we know.

We see the beauty in the imperfections,
And the strength in our vulnerabilities.
We learn to appreciate what’s real,
And find joy at the moment, without a deal.

So let us take a step, towards accepting the truth,
And leave behind the pain of our youth.
For it’s in this journey, that we find our way,
To a life of peace, acceptance, and true bliss every day.

In conclusion, accepting reality is a process of growth and self-discovery. It requires us to let go of our preconceived notions and embrace the truth, no matter how difficult it may seem. By doing so, we open ourselves up to a world of possibilities, where we can find peace, happiness, and true contentment in life. The poem we discussed today serves as a reminder of this journey and encourages us to take the first step toward a more fulfilling life. We hope this piece of writing has inspired you and has provided you with a new perspective on the importance of accepting reality.

How Far We’ve Come

img_8055

It’s been awhile ever since my last post. And, that’s because it’s been a while since I had time to actually sit down and write. Looking back, I feel that I have come so far by striving hard to attain and push forward towards my goals. However, the ocean ain’t calm. When something begins to stir, I will tend to panic and struggle mentally to deal with the circumstances.

Life always seems to present us with innumerable challenges and problems on a daily basis till our last breath. While reflecting, the Disney movie ‘Moana’ came to my mind. Moana draws on legends to tell a story of bravery. It calls for young people to embrace their family and community while also being brave and authentic. Moana’s big song, “How Far I’ll Go,” is covered with both warmth and wisdom.

Notably, life presents us with challenges when we set out to accomplish something great, so if one is going through tough times, it probably means one is taking on a big project. This can be illustrated in the movie where Moana has heard the ocean calling to her since she was a little girl. Doors will slam in your face where Moana loses her hope to save her island and community. However, she picked herself up, dust herself, and knock again. That’s the only way to achieve her goal in order to save her family and community. This reminds me that loss of hope is temporary. It might just compel you to pick yourself up and move forward…

As 2016 is coming to an end, it’s hard to believe 2017 is almost here! And whichever path we choose, it will always have been the one we needed to learn the most. Whether you believe it or not, you are enough and you deserve to be happy. It has taken me a while to come to terms and I still know that I am enough … and so do everybody. One last conclusion is that achievement will never be as fulfilling as the journey. If you are not able to enjoy the journey with those around, then the end goal becomes meaningless.

“Think of all the beauty still left around you and be happy.” ― Anne Frank

Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016

Looking at everything through crystal clear vision, it was impossible to imagine that I had spent time working towards goals that I want, developing skills I want to use.

In the new year, I don’t wish to do anything differently. I just hope that I can continue to be healthy and rather be a happy person with a certain set of attitudes.  Lots of life is about perspective. I wish I didn’t take these experiences to teach me not to take so many things for granted. Significantly, I’ve also learned that present moment living is the only way to go.

Sometimes when lives seem like we are driving backwards, we are really learning the steps that will guide us into the greatest forward leaps of our lives. I just have to be patient and realize that sometimes putting one foot in front of the other doesn’t go exactly in the direction I planned. This reminded me to continue to have faith in myself, even when it seems like all is lost.
And the good news is, faith is free.

As Lauren Kate asserted that “Sometimes beautiful things come into our lives out of nowhere. We can’t always understand them, but we have to trust in them. I know you want to question everything, but sometimes it pays to just have a little faith.”
